Black only has one extra tempi for the pawn basically--very risky; it's essentially a Scotch gambit minus a tempi. On Board 2, Jorge Sammour-Hasbun played an attractive tactical game using an underestimated line of the Scotch Gambit (beginning 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.Nf3 Bb4+) against Dean Ippolito. I've started transposing into the Blackburne gambit: 3.d4 c6 and it seems like Black has less compensation than the Icelandic (because white played a developing move instead of a defensive one on move 3). The opening was a two knights defense- scotch gambit- which seemed to irk my opponent, as he fell into time trouble trying to work out the position and played less than optimum moves. It then depends on your style of play to decide which to choose. Was Jonathan Penrose the last master to venture the Scotch Gambit? In the 1st game, I played white in a Scotch Gambit and got some advantage in the opening. Chernev's is a classic, but the openings of the games contained are out-dated and uncommon in top-level competition, such as the Giucco Piano, King's Gambit, Scotch Game, etc. Nothing compares to listening to a stronger player articulate his plans. And what if he moved somewhere else on that turn? It is still a fun gambit though and certainly takes unprepared White players offguard.
